3D Open and closed forms.

3D open and closed forms

Open forms:
To create an open form i used the technique called 'pinch pot. This method simply means sticking your finger or thumb in the centre of a fairly even width of clay and gently pinching your fingers, applying enough pressure to create a pot-like shape.
To ensure the clay does not collapse, the thickness of it needs to be at a reasonable size. This will make it easier to manipulate.

I made 3 small open form pinch pots, they were all a reasonable size so that i could add detail.
I created various shapes using this technique.

After creating the basic shape of my forms, i then used a variety of tools to create textures and design to my work. I used a tool to smooth out the edges, to give it a clean finish and make it look more professional.

Closed forms:
to create a closed form i used the same technique of creating a pinch-pot. To make the piece closed i made two pots, both of roughly the same size, i then scored the edges applied slip and stuck them together, to remove any visible grooves i used a kidney tool (PICTURE) as shown below to smooth out the surface and give it a clean finish.
I used a fair few techniques when it comes to adding detail etc.

Being inspired by Gabrielle Baecile and Pamela Sunday i used some of there techniques in my own work, such as attaching pieces, removing and adding texture using scrafitto and various ceramics tools.

After learning how to create my own open and closed form, i then made a series of different pieces related to natural form. I started by sketching out a few designs to create my own independent piece.
This gave me a view on the whole composition of what i wanted to create and whether it would be a positive outcome. i experimented with different shapes using this technique, i wanted a challenge in creating a different outcome when still using the same technique.

I decided to go with the style of Baecile, i found her work extremely interesting, she's very inspired by the organic and natural side of life, in which she explores through her art work. When it came to actually getting an understanding of the form and shape in which i wanted in my work, i then had to attach them. Again using the pinch pot technique and then joining eact of them together was quite tricky, but I'm happy with the overall finish of my work, to give it a smooth and clean cut finish i simply used a damp sponge and gently, with minimal pressure went around my work, making sure the groves were properly attached and not too visible.
I like that the detail involves attachments, cut outs and add-ons. Although this is a lot going on i thick as a final finished piece the form come out original and unique.
